Working with a team in Nepal from the Netherlands
The overlap runs from the start of the Dutch working day into the early afternoon, when Kathmandu finishes. Standups and reviews fit in the morning; the afternoon is for work that does not need a same-day answer. From the last Sunday in March, summer time pulls the two days an hour closer.
Language is usually where offshore work loses time, and here that cost is small. With English proficiency as high as it is in the Netherlands, specifications, tickets and review comments can usually be written once, in English, without a translation step on either side.
The paperwork starts with whose terms apply. The Dutch IT industry has its own standard supplier terms and central government has its own purchasing terms, so naming the governing set in the first quote or order — and adding a data processing agreement for any personal data — settles most of it before work begins.
An invoice from a supplier outside the EU normally carries no Dutch VAT. For most services the tax is reverse-charged: the Dutch business reports it in its own VAT return and, where it can deduct VAT, reclaims it in the same return.
Worth knowing in the Netherlands
- AVG · UAVG
One national regulator
The GDPR, the AVG in Dutch, applies alongside the Dutch implementation act, with the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens as the single supervisory authority. Nepal has no EU adequacy decision, so transfers there need a safeguard such as standard contractual clauses.
- NLdigital
Standard IT terms
The NLdigital Voorwaarden, successor to the Nederland ICT Voorwaarden, are the Dutch IT industry's standard terms, used by more than 3,000 IT companies. Central government buys IT under its own general terms, ARBIT. Both are published in English.

Offshore development questions from the Netherlands
When does the time gap between the Netherlands and Nepal change?
- Twice a year. On the last Sunday in March the Netherlands moves to summer time and Amsterdam's gap to Kathmandu narrows from 4 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours 45 minutes; on the last Sunday in October it widens again. Nepal keeps the same clock all year.
How much of the Dutch working day overlaps with Kathmandu?
- 4 hours 15 minutes in winter and 5 hours 15 minutes in summer, against a 10:00–18:00 day in Kathmandu. In winter the Kathmandu day starts at 5:15 am Amsterdam time and ends at 1:15 pm, so the shared hours run from your start until early afternoon.
Which terms do Dutch IT contracts usually use?
- Many IT suppliers use the NLdigital Voorwaarden, the industry's standard terms, while central government buys IT under ARBIT. Both are published in English, so naming the governing set in the first quote or order is straightforward even with a supplier abroad.
Who supervises GDPR transfers from the Netherlands?
- The Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens, the single Dutch supervisory authority. Nepal has no EU adequacy decision, so personal data sent there needs a safeguard such as standard contractual clauses, and a data processing agreement sets out what the team may do with it.
Is Dutch VAT charged on an invoice from Nepal?
- The supplier's invoice normally shows no Dutch VAT. Under the reverse charge the Dutch business declares the VAT itself on its return, and a business entitled to deduct VAT reclaims the same amount there.
